Arpino in south africa

The Craft and Design Institute, in collaboration with ARPINO urban furniture, proudly present the next instalment of the Creative Exchange, as part of the upcoming #CocreateDESIGN Festival.

Join us for a robust panel discussion about the critical, but often overlooked, role that urban design plays in an inclusive, modern society. Convened by The City’s Zahira Asmal, industry experts will examine visibility in the context of public space-making. She will be in conversation with leading experts, including V&A Waterfront’s Development Manager Mark Noble, Arpino’s Industrial Designer, Carlos Pereira, on the topics of cultural inclusivity, public-private partnerships and global collaboration. Full panel to be announced in early February.
This debate is part of the #CoCreate DESIGNFESTIVAL-2018.

CONCEPT / POSITIONING

Arpino is an contemporary design brand that confidently meets the challenges of the new global city, imagining it as a place of autonomy, community and connectivity. Our carefully crafted pieces – designed and produced between Europe and Africa – embody cutting-edge technology, contemporary design nous and a strong ethics of environmental sustainability. Led by the experienced industrial designer Carlos Pereira, we champion freedom as well as functionality, approaching urban environments with the simple goal of making them better places to be.

Arpino’s first product line, the core OX series, is inspired by a borderless notion of what it means to inhabit and use common spaces, day and night. We believe in conscious design that accommodates and includes all cultures and topologies, working with neutral and modular forms that are highly adaptable to different spaces – from housing estates and public plazas to schools and shopping malls. This range includes elegant urban lighting and way finders, airy pergolas, multimedia kiosks and protective bus shelters as well as traditional urban essentials such as tree guards, bins, benches and bollards. These everyday items – common to so many cities all over the world – are however turned on their head, transformed into high-quality, minimal design pieces that work with each other as well as with the space they are located. This fundamental urban equipment, with its quality of lightness and modularity, is as easily at home in a square in New York as it is an airport in Luanda. OX is, first and foremost, made for beautiful and efficient common spaces and the people who use them, wherever they are in the world.

We aim to mediate the integration of technology in public space and play a positive role among the communities who use it.
After years of careful conceptualization and research, Arpino will officially launch in February 2018 in Johannesburg, and give a further presentation at Salon del Mobile in Milan. We aim to continue our quest for fresh, innovative and eco-friendly design solutions that work with contemporary, multicultural urban environments facing constant flux.

We are, quite simply, design for the future.

INNOVATION / DESIGN / TECHNOLOGY / ENVIRONMENT

INNOVATION
Our research depends on constant experimentation as well as design expertise. Arpino doesn’t just come up with new ideas for urban spaces: we want to inspire change in how they are used, and ultimately, make them better places to be.

DESIGN
Restraint is key to our design ethos. Arpino considers that any urban object, be it a bollard or a bicycle rack, should have its own conscious identity that perfectly fits the purpose for which it is made – nothing less, nothing more.

TECHNOLOGY
Technology is changing how we use cities, and good urban design needs to hone this transformation. Arpino is conscious of the power that wireless and mobility technology hold for public spaces, and incorporates it in its pieces to the highest standards.

ENVIRONMENT
Arpino prides itself on realising inventive solutions that work as much for the environment as they do for the city. From 100% solar-generated equipment and efficient LED light sources to “clean” paints and easy recyclablity, sustainability is our priority.
